LIFE LIFE is the EU’s financial instrument supporting environmental and nature conservation projects throughout the EU, as well as in some candidate, acceding and neighbouring countries.
Since 1992, LIFE has co-financed some 3115 projects, contributing approximately €2 billion to the protection of the environment.
LIFE+, the Financial Instrument for the Environment, has entered into force with the publication of the Regulation in the Official Journal L149 of 9 June 2007 (Regolamento (CE) n. 614/2007 del Parlamento europeo e del Consiglio, del 23 maggio 2007.)
Natura 2000 is an ecological network of protected areas in the territory of the European Union.
The EU is committed to the protection of biodiversity, and to halting biodiversity loss within the EU by 2020.
Over the last 25 years the EU has built up a vast network of 26.000 protected areas in all the Member States and an area of more than 850.000 km2, which is 18% of the EU’s land area. Known as Natura 2000, it is the largest network of protected areas in the world, and a testament to the importance that EU citizens attach to biodiversity.
